UEFA Dismisses Rijeka's Appeal, North Stand to Remain Closed for Match Against AEK

UEFA stands by its decision to punish Rijeka for fan incidents during the recent match vs Olympiakos

UEFA dismissed HNK Rijeka's appeal on their decision to punish the club for discriminatory behaviour and the use of pyrotechnics during the Champions League play-off second leg match between HNK Rijeka and Olympiacos FC, played on August 22 in Rijeka.

HNK Rijeka confirmed the unofficial report about UEFA's final decision earlier today. The club is thus forced to pay a fine of €21.000, and the northern stand of Rujevica stadium will remain closed for the upcoming match against AEK, to be played on Thursday, September 14.

UEFA's decision was first announced on Monday, September 4, charging Rijeka for setting off of fireworks, blocking stairways and discriminatory behaviour.

According to HNK Rijeka, it was stated by UEFA the original proposed fine was substantially reduced due to good organisation of the match and adherement to all applying regulations. In case of repeated fan incidents, future international matches might be played behind closed doors, with the club facing a fine of up to €50.000.

Regarding tomorrow's Europa League group stage opener, the fans are asked to follow regulations and to refrain from the use of pyrotechnics, all types of discriminatory behaviour and inflicting any kind of damage during the game. The club thanked all the fans for their attendance so far, inviting them to come support the players at tomorrow's match despite the closure of the northern stand.

AEK has officially stated their fans won't be attending the match, making the entire capacity of the southern stand available to fans of Rijeka. Remaining tickets can still be bought today and tomorrow, up until the end of the first half.
