Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed that permission has been given to the Policing Authority to appoint a former PSNI officer to the position of Superintendent.
Deputy Varadkar was discussing the garda reform in the Dail and confirmed that the appointment had been approved.
He said that the appointment was "a very practical example of reform underway," he said.
He added: "For the first time somebody from an outside police force - in this case someone from Northern Ireland, from the PSNI - being appointed to a senior position within the gardai."
The appointment of senior positions within An Garda Siochana requires approval from the Government.
