Nationalist Party MP Jason Azzopardi has won a libel case against Vince Borg following Borg having asked Azzopardi whether he had met a “working girl” in a leading hotel. Borg was ordered to pay Azzopardi €1,000 for defamation.
Dr Azzopardi took libel action against Borg following a comment posted on Facebook by Borg on 5th August 2020.
In the comment in English, Borg asked Dr Azzopardi whether he had ever used Portomaso to meet up with what he termed as “a working girl”.
The Opposition MP said that people understand the term “working girl” to be a prostitute and he declared that he had never had relations with a prostitute.
On his part Borg denied he referred to a prostitute and said by “a working girl” he had referred to a female employee at the same hotel.
However, Magistrate Rachel Montebello remarked that the insinuation had been that the MP had been with a prostitute.
She found Borg guilty of having libelled and defamed Azzopardi and while condemning his behaviour ordered him to pay €1,000 in compensation to Dr Azzopardi.
